Highlights of Past BST Projects & Accomplishments
- due to persistent efforts of BST, on October 28, 1997, the Berkeley City Council passed a resolution in support of a Democratic and Independent Taiwan and wrote letters of concern to elected U.S. federal officials, urging them to support a democratic and independent Taiwan;
- lobbied the ASUC Senate (UC Berkeley student government) in 1997 to pass "Bill #20 in Support of a Democratic and Independent Taiwan," and many subsequent bills since to support BST activities
- co-sponsored with Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) and organized the first ever annual West Coast Intercollegiate Taiwanese-American Association (ITASA) conference that brought together 200+ students over a weekend to learn about Taiwan and the Taiwanese-American community (April 1999);
- created a picturesque and textual display that showcased Taiwanese indigenous nations and comprehensive history of Taiwan on Indigenous Peoples' Day;
- spearheaded the annual "February 28, 1947 Massacre: Taiwan's Tragedy Remembered" ommemoration: a week-long commemoration to bring awareness of injustices inflicted on the Taiwanese through educational museum-like displays with commemorative music on Sproul Plaza, night lectures and films, and a one-page Daily Californian spread;
- wrote and had published letters to the editor and op-eds; e.g., in a Letter to the Editor of the Los Angeles Time, former BST member Ryan Shough debated on the issue of unification addressed in UCLA Professor Tom Plate's column; Shough received praise of eloquence from Professor Plate himself;
- participated in nation-wide campaigns organized by other grassroots organizations addressing Taiwan-sovereignty related issues; e.g., SAVE (Spoonbill Action Voluntary Echo) environmental campaigns;
- letter drive campaigns urging U.S. President Bill Clinton, California senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, and other Bay Area locally and federally elected officials to create a Taiwan policy that addresses issues of self-determination and democracy for the Taiwanese people; that recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign nation; that rejects the One China policy & the Three Noes (thousands of signatures were obtained!);
